So, I just finished reading (for probably the fifth time) The Voyage of the Dawn Treader by C.S. Lewis and decided to do an ekphrastic response. It's intended as a song.
They set sail on a ship that’s the bearer of kings, Queens, children, of mice and of men Eastward bound on a journey, a quest in each heart Off to find what awaits at world’s end. And the battles we fight, we must fight from within When your conscience is a Lion, temptation can’t win. We grow on this voyage, our old lives long gone As we seek to tread the waters of the dawn. You will learn as they did, when you seek the unknown, Oftentimes, what you find is yourself Vanity and greed and selfish pride revealed In a cave or a book on a shelf. A stern look corrects you. A strong love connects you. Pain and loss sometimes heal and renew. When the perils of the sea aim to crush your fair ship, Together is how you’ll pull through. And the battles we fight, we must fight from within When your conscience is a Lion, temptation can’t win. We grow on this voyage, our old lives long gone As we seek to tread the waters of the dawn. Keeping North on our port side, the starboard side South, Sailing into the rising sun All darkness forgotten, each bathed in His light Finds peace and sweet rest hard won. And the battles we fight, we must fight from within When your conscience is a Lion, temptation can’t win. We grow on this voyage, our old lives long gone As we seek to tread the waters of the dawn.
